Countdown

Countdown

Capitalize on the FOMO effect of limited-time offers by including a countdown timer in your campaigns.

Countdown is an OptiMonk campaign element that displays a ticking timer inside your popup, sticky bar, or embedded content — visually communicating that an offer, discount, or opportunity is available only for a limited time. By showing visitors exactly how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds remain before an offer expires, a countdown timer activates the psychological principle of scarcity and loss aversion: the fear of missing out on a deal is a significantly stronger motivator than the appeal of gaining one. OptiMonk supports two types of countdown timers to match different campaign strategies. A fixed-date countdown counts down to an absolute deadline — the same end point for every visitor, ideal for flash sales, holiday promotions, or event-based offers with a hard cutoff. A per-visitor countdown counts down from the moment each individual visitor first sees the campaign — giving every visitor their own personalized urgency window, ideal for evergreen discount offers or post-signup incentive expiry. Both types can be fully styled to match your campaign design and brand colors.

Key benefits

  • Urgency converts hesitation into action. Visitors who are on the fence about a purchase — interested but not yet committed — are disproportionately responsive to time pressure. A visible countdown timer removes the option of "I'll come back later" by making the cost of delay concrete and immediate. Studies consistently show that time-limited offers with visible countdowns outperform identical offers without them, particularly for discount and free shipping campaigns where the monetary incentive is tangible.
  • Two timer modes for evergreen and event-based campaigns alike. Fixed-date timers synchronize urgency across your entire audience — every visitor sees the same deadline, which reinforces the credibility of event-based sales. Per-visitor timers personalize the urgency window to each individual, making evergreen discount campaigns feel time-sensitive without requiring a real sale end date. Having both modes available means you can apply countdown urgency to any campaign type, not just scheduled promotions.
  • Fully integrated into the campaign design — no separate app or widget needed. The countdown element is built directly into OptiMonk's campaign editor and can be added to any popup, teaser, sticky bar, or embedded block. It inherits your campaign's color scheme, fonts, and layout constraints, and can be resized, repositioned, and styled like any other element — without embedding a third-party widget or writing custom code.

How it works

Step 1
Add a Countdown element to your campaign in the editor

In the OptiMonk campaign editor, open the element panel and drag a Countdown block into your campaign layout. Position it wherever it will be most visible — typically above or below the main offer headline — and resize it to fit the design.

Step 2
Choose your timer type and set the end condition

In the Countdown element settings, select Fixed date to set a specific calendar date and time when the timer expires — the same moment for every visitor who sees the campaign. Or select Per visitor to set a duration (for example, 15 minutes or 24 hours) that starts counting down from the first moment each individual visitor views the campaign. Configure the display format — days, hours, minutes, seconds, or any combination — and style the timer digits and labels to match your campaign palette.

Step 3
Publish — the timer runs and expires automatically

Once the campaign is live, the countdown displays in real time for every qualifying visitor. For fixed-date timers, when the deadline passes the campaign can be set to stop displaying automatically. For per-visitor timers, when a visitor's personal window expires, the campaign suppresses for them or displays an expired state, depending on your configuration. No manual intervention is needed to start or stop the timer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Countdown feature in OptiMonk?+

Countdown is a campaign element in OptiMonk that displays a real-time ticking timer inside a popup, sticky bar, or embedded content to create urgency around a limited-time offer. It supports two modes: a fixed-date timer that counts down to the same deadline for every visitor, and a per-visitor timer that starts a personalized countdown from the moment each individual visitor first sees the campaign. Both types are configured and styled directly in the OptiMonk campaign editor.

What is the difference between a fixed-date countdown and a per-visitor countdown?+

A fixed-date countdown counts down to a specific calendar date and time — the same endpoint for every visitor who sees the campaign. This is ideal for real sales events, seasonal promotions, and flash sales where the urgency is genuine and shared. A per-visitor countdown starts a fresh timer for each individual visitor the moment they first view the campaign, running for a set duration you define — for example, 20 minutes or 48 hours. This is ideal for evergreen campaigns where you want every visitor to feel time pressure regardless of when they visit.

Does the per-visitor countdown reset if a visitor leaves and comes back?+

The per-visitor timer is tied to the visitor's session and browser state. If a visitor closes the page and returns within the same browser session, the timer continues from where it left off rather than resetting — maintaining the integrity of the urgency window. The exact behavior across sessions depends on how your campaign's display frequency settings are configured, but the intent of per-visitor countdowns is to preserve a consistent, non-resettable deadline for each visitor.

Can I style the countdown timer to match my brand?+

Yes. The Countdown element in OptiMonk's editor is fully customizable. You can change the digit color, background color, label text and color, font size, and the overall dimensions of the timer block. You can also choose which time units to display — for example, showing only hours and minutes for a short-window offer, or days, hours, minutes, and seconds for a multi-day sale. The timer adapts to your campaign's design system like any other element.

What happens when the countdown reaches zero?+

For fixed-date countdown campaigns, you can configure the campaign to stop displaying automatically once the deadline passes — ensuring that no visitor sees an expired offer after the sale ends. For per-visitor timers, when an individual visitor's window expires, the campaign can either stop displaying for that visitor or show an alternative expired state, depending on your campaign settings. This prevents the credibility damage of a visitor seeing a "0:00:00" timer on a campaign that is still actively running.
